In the midst of the United Nations Security Council’s 5th committee session, delegates from France and Malta have expressed disagreement over how to address the growing crisis in Haiti.
In an interview featuring both delegates, Malta unveiled a proposal aimed at addressing gang violence in developing countries. The plan involves creating a sub-community to evaluate nations’ responses to gang activity, with approved nations receiving assistance. Additionally, Malta advocates for supporting rehabilitation programs for gang members seeking to leave the lifestyle behind.
However, the French delegation strongly criticized Malta’s resolution, labeling it as “BS” and accusing it of being both “money-wasting” and “time-wasting.” France argues that simply rehabilitating gang members is ineffective, as new recruits quickly replace those who leave the gangs. Instead, France proposes focusing on preventive measures such as bolstering border security to dismantle the gang system entirely. The delegate of France ended the interview, stating that “[Malta’s] bloc sucks.”
As the UNSC heads towards the end of their first topic, blocs are scrambling to come up with the most consensual ideas.
