“As humans, we have the instinct to kill, but we don’t because we also have morality.”
-United Arab Emirates delegate
Automated weapons are weapons that have been developed to be self-operating weaponry that do not require a user present to function. As it continues to develop, the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) has also been added in order to make automated weapons more effective.
The DISEC debate exposed the countries to their unaligned ideals, proving to make this topic a harder one to come to an agreement on.
Russia argues that there would be less lives lost with automated war machines, due to no one being behind the wheel, but the Democratic Republic of Congo has pushed for a complete ban of automated weapons, claiming that they would be too dangerous if they fell in the hands of the wrong people.
Two delegates on opposite sides of the argument recite provoking poetry in order to get their point across.
“As humans we have the instinct to kill, everyone in this room is a threat to our resources, but why don’t we? Because we have morality. What is stopping a machine from killing! It has no morality!”
America retorted with a ballad that brings to light the tool that automated weapons could become, being used to build a better future.
Despite this, the people are still largely against the idea of automated weapons. An anonymous chaperone witness sitting in the committee states in a quick interview that “if you’re not shooting at each others’ soldiers, the guns are really only meant for the innocent,” which is a very eloquent and real way of putting it.
