On Saturday, Euronews spoke to SPECPOL’s delegate of Brazil, Gabriel Latge. At the time, SPECPOL was discussing peacekeeping in the Global South, so he gave Euronews a special look inside the world of SPECPOL.
Alongside Italy, Brazil leads O Bloc a group of like-minded countries focused on looking ahead towards the future. Together, O Bloc plans to internationally train thousands of peacekeepers to safely, and more effectively restore peace in the Global South. O Bloc consists of countries from all over the world.
However, as O Bloc has decided that to fund this initiative, European countries will be paying. Since Europe colonized the global south, it is fair for them to fund this project. Although this sounds fair, this is a sharp hit to the EU, because only European nations will be paying. However, this is a hit Europe must take to properly restore the Global South.
Additional information that Brazil provided Euronews is that O Bloc will work because ” Brazil looks to the future,” while ” [Other countries] look into the past.” Latge then described Brazil’s heroic intervention in the civil Haiti mission, helping to end the conflict. ” Brazil has helped in the past,” he said. ” [We] trade over 1,000 peacekeepers per year!”
With resolutions yet to pass, O Bloc hopes to change the way peacekeepers operate in the Global South. Stay tuned to Euronews to hear more about O Bloc in the upcoming sessions!
