– Scott Tannas
Canada is a nation that is no stranger to division; from the East vs the West, French vs English, and Province vs Territory debates, the country has seen its fair share of issues regarding separation, but none thus far have been as serious or as real as the threat of Alberta breaking away from the North. For a long time, citizens of the province along with representative and legislators have felt that on the federal scale, the concerns of the province have not been heard and that their freedom to sell their resources, mainly oil and gas, have been violated and neglected by the national liberal government under Justin Trudeau and now Mark Carney. Alberta is resource rich and is very well known for its gas industry, but often time federal regulations limit the regions ability to trade its oil to whom it wants, and puts other limitations in place that prevent a nation wide pipeline for the easier distribution of oil.
Speaking with Senator Scott Tannas, Fox News has learned that the independence of Alberta was indeed a hotly debated topic in the Canadian Senate, with a back and forth about proper representation and control over resources for provinces guiding the conversation. Representatives from other provinces seem to not fully understand the struggles that Alberta has to deal with when it comes to getting past regulations that prevent them from achieving their economic potential, which is the major reason why Albertan independence is being considered in the first place. Tannas, when asked if he would still want Albertan separatism if the conservative win the upcoming federal election had this to say:
“I don’t think we would. I think it really boils down to who’s in power and we don’t get the same representation under the liberals as we would under Pierre and the conservatives”

From speaking to Tannas, it has been made clear that Albertans are serious about their independence and that should the federal government continue to neglect their wants and needs, separation from Canada could be in the cards for Alberta’s future, whether they go on as their own nation, join the United States, or even come up with some unique solution to the independence issue.
