In ATS, opinions swirl around the controversial topic of climate change. As a bloc, predominant leaders Russia and the United Kingdom insist that extracting minerals is necessary for other communities to be supported. They also state that the minerals would be excavated in a safe and orderly fashion, but the opposing bloc seems to think different.
The ideas of China and the United States of America’s bloc are clash heavily with the previous sentiment. They inform the general committee that while mining has its uses, it would not be useful at this time to continue mining. They also are maintaining the fact that if countries were to start the mining process, sea levels would rise significantly and countless sea animals would perish. They have reiterated multiple times that Antarctica will fall to its demise if action is not taken, and if countries do not cease mining in Antarctica. Russia’s bloc, however, has shot back, saying that they will mine carefully and extract materials in a mindful matter, thus keeping the communities safe and not destroying the ecosystem. However, the bloc of China and the USA, alongside other countries, managed to outvoted the opposing bloc, and the resolution paper written by China, USA, and other countries was passed.
