Q & A: Ye Jianying

Xinhua News reporter’s exclusive interview with Communist Party Leader Ye Jianying

Q: What is the CPC currently pursuing?

A: Okay well currently it is quite chaotic there are quite a few threats to us. Our goal is still quite far away. The CPC, you know, there are the Kuomintang, the KMT…

Q: I thought you allied with the Kuomintang?

A: We did but you know there’s always the chance of us (The CPC) wanting to betray them and if they betray us first, you know there’s still that threat. The Japanese who have started invading Shanghai and while we have defeated some of their troops, there is the major threat that is up north. And lastly there is now the Soviet threat, they aren’t exactly a threat. They’re kind of neutral but if we make the wrong move, we could potentially make an enemy with the Soviets as well. So there’s quite a lot of things to juggle. There is still a mole that we haven’t found out and we still have a very bad reputation among the people so even if we did manage to beat the KMT, the people wouldn’t really support us. They wouldn’t believe we are strong enough to lead the country.

Q: Who do you believe the mole is? Any speculations?

A: I do not have any current speculations, I’m thinking it might be. For a bit I did think it was He long but I did think about that and decide that it wasn’t. It probably wasn’t him because he did — there was a miscommunication and we resolved it later and his forces are once again allied with us. There is no suspicion on him anymore.

Q: Where are your forces currently standing? Where are you?

A: We are currently in Chongqing.

Q: And where are you looking to go to?

A: We are looking to go to Yan’An because there are some troops there already and although we’ve just learnt that it’s kind of a barren dessert. We’ve committed to it already so we are going to set us a base there and see where that takes us. We do need a solid place that is centralized to put resources into, instead of spreading ourselves too thin.

Q: I heard that Mao Zedong wants to take over the specialized army…

A: Well, that’s already happened. Mao Zedong has power over the final decision of what the SRA does because we appointed him as our spiritual Chairman of China because we believe he has the strategies to lead us to victory so if we allow him power to give the SRA the final say, there will be greater organization. If one person can see the big picture then everything will work out
