Whizzing pens and constant debate – just a few words that describe the first session of the European Union (EU) at CAHSMUN.
After a close vote on the primary speakers list, topic A of Upholding the Rule of Law in Member States was chosen. Cruising through three moderated caucuses, focusing on addressing corruption and organized crime, judicial reforms, and media freedom, as well as one unmoderated caucus that led to a mega bloc, the first committee session was one to remember.
When it came to the five minute unmoderated caucus, time passed quickly. At that point, Spain had proposed a widely acclaimed idea, stating that, “we need an independent [unbiased] European-wide news source,” during a moderated caucus on media freedom. This was supported by almost all of the committee members with loud knocking on the table.
Later, this was again supported by Sweden, who expressed that, “we must teach people the difference between propaganda and real news.”
Unmoderated caucus – a relatively short one, but an eventful one. Following speeches by Spain and Sweden, as well as others who supported their notion, almost all of the committee had grouped together. It was soon one mega bloc.

However, one delegate, Germany, showed strong opinions against this ideal. It’s up to the next session for this committee to come to a conclusion.
